How To Sleep With a Broken Ankle — Bed Tent

Recently I broke my leg 😢, just above the ankle, and hadn’t anticipated the effect on my sleep. How was I going to be able to sleep with the duvet pushing down on the foot? At first I was in what’s known as a moon boot.

I was able to take this off at night, which led to the issue of the duvet pushing down on my foot. This led to an increase in the pain level, as well as twisting the joint out of true, leading to further damage. Fortunately for me, my awesome wife came up with the idea of fashioning a “bed tent”, which kept the duvet off my foot. After my recent visit to the local fracture clinic, I now have a stookie (cast for those outwith Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿). The “bed tent” is just as effective for this 😁

Step 1

Get a couple of decent sized cardboard boxes; in this instance shoe boxes.

Shoe box; top and bottom.

Step 2

Fill boxes with old clothing; we used some old jumpers, and secure in place with tape.

Step 3

Place boxes at end of bed, with a decent separation.

Step 4

Make up the bed. I found it useful to tuck the duvet under the mattress at the end of the bed, and the side of the bed next to the outer box.

Step 5

Sleep 😴

  1. Very clever indeed! I remember when I broke my foot and having a sheet on it at night was a killer! Next time I’ll be ready! Hope you’re healed quickly Jez
