Glenlee, The Tall Ship Re-Imagined As AI Artwork in my Fan Of… Series

Hi All 👋 Feel free to join this weekly challenge whenever you think, “I’m a fan of…” (see below for how-to).

From Real Photos to COllaborative AI Artwork: My Experiment with AI Art

This week’s Fan Of… #233 is AI-assisted artwork featuring the Glenlee. The Glenlee, known locally as the Tall Ship, sits alongside the Riverside Museum on the shores of the Clyde in Glasgow (follow the link for more on both the Museum & The Glenlee). I used this photo I took years ago (below) as the basis for my prompt engineering.

My first prompt was to add in steampunk elements to the ship, with dirigibles overhead & a Victorian-era setting.

My next re-imagining was a futuristic-looking setting. My first go rendered a futuristic setting, but the ship looked old (below), so I went back into the prompt to make the vessel more futuristic & sleek in design while maintaining the look of a sailing ship (the look is now more ironclad).

I decided to give the ship a more mystical look. I forgot to tell the prompt I wanted a wide format, so it came out square. Back to the prompt & a wide-format image was generated. Here we can see how the AI changes the image with each prompt, changing the colours & look & not just making it a wide format from square.

For my next prompt, I went for a more enchanted look with the addition of glowing runes on the ship & an ethereal-looking dragon hovering alongside.

My next set of images shows the Tall Ship in a post-apocalyptic world. The first image is very static but does convey a sense of decay & ruin. For the second image, I made the addition of helicopters, explosions & falling missiles, as if we were still in a battle.

The following set of images show the Tall Ship in a more eerie setting: first shrouded in fog with distant dragons approaching.

I wanted the mythical beast to be more of a feature & in the second picture, it is rising up from under the ship.

The third shows the ship sailing through stormy seas, being attacked by dragons. The fourth is similar but was envisioned as a one-on-one battle between the dragon & the ship.

Out of all these various settings, the futuristic ones were what really captured my imagination, but I knew it could be taken further. Below is my favourite?image from my week’s work at prompt-engineering: The Glenlee, re-imagined as a futuristic ship, still with sails, arriving at a huge Off-World dock. (?This is a very distilled version of the prompt used to generate this Sci-Fi image.)

The Evolving Art of Prompt Engineering in AI-Generated Artwork

Prompt engineering is an evolving function; for the same prompt, you will get different outputs from different photos. The prompt needs to be tweaked constantly to fit the original photo & the desired outcome. So, join me over the next few weeks as I delve further into the world of prompt engineering & artwork manipulation.

With work pressure increasing over the coming couple of weeks, I’ll be taking a wee break from my Fan Of… posts. Fan Of… will return on Jan 08 2024, so come back then when I will go further into my reasons for embarking on artistic creativity with AI. I’ll be concentrating on a project involving an Old Steam Train that runs from the Bo’ness station. Here’s a sneak peak ?
