Here we are in the wee town of Alloway, Ayr, at Rabbie Burns Cottage. For more information, visit the National Trust For Scotland Site.

This cottage is where Rabbie Burns was born & grew up with three siblings until the age of 7.

Burns Cottage – Exterior

Interior

The cottage has been restored to how it would have been when Rabbie lived there with his family & livestock in the mid-1700s. On the walls are excerpts from his poetry as well as Scots words.

The next carousel shows the livestock end of the house.

Next up is the family living quarters, adjacent to the livestock rooms. In the kitchen you can see the bed recess that Rabbie shared with all his siblings. These kitchen bed recesses can still be found in 20th century Tenements in Glasgow.

Exterior

Outside is a vegetable plot by the house, as well as a smallholding with a pond that Rabbie’s father planned to turn into a market garden.

Scenes from life

Built into the drystane dyke are wee pictures from life in mid-to-late 18th century Scotland.

Attached to the cottage & smallholding are some gardens with plenty of variety of flowers. You’ll see these all pop up in my FOTD posts at some point.

And finally, there is the full scale wicker sculpture of Tam fleeing from the witches on Meg (Tam O’ Shanter).

Join me again next week as we take a walk along the Poets Path
