He really was. The squirrels at the Glasgow Botanic Gardens will come right upto you and take food out of your hands!
I used to feed the squirels from my hand when I was a youngster. Then one day one of them turned around and bit me … little devil 🙂

So cute but so very not red; is this an American one?
It’s descended from the American squirrel; they came over here a long time ago. We do still have Reds in Scotland, but they tend to be more in the wild, and a lot less of them.
Ah, thank you. We have British ones here now and they are bigger and stronger than the red ones. Makes for much movement in the squirrel world!
There was, unfortunately, a point when the greys, because of their larger size, came close to making the reds extinct. Luckily, the reds do seem to be amking a bit of a comeback.
