Fan Of… #61 — Homemade Face Masks

·

Hi All 👋 Feel free to join in this weekly challenge whenever you find yourself thinking “I’m a fan of…” (see below for how to).

This week’s Fan Of… is homemade face masks.

Working as I do in food retail, both in the store & delivery shopping to customers doors, I come in constant contact with people. When we found out that we were not due to get face masks until the latter part of April, my awesome wife, Susan, set about making us some herself. These aren’t as effective as N95 masks, but do serve as a reminder to others to keep their distance & some protection is better than none!

After much research, Susan used the video below as a basis for the face masks with a few changes to take into account her maual dexterity issues. She sewed the sides before making the pleats, and then sewed down the sides a second time to secure the pleats. As we don’t have a lot of elastic, the ends are sewn onto the mask, instead of running through a channel at the side. My wife also used a plastic coated paperclip inside the top hem, to form a nose clip, to keep the mask secure. We use a none woven material as the filter, to be replaced by N95 filters when we can get them.

Even my drinking buddy, Slugz, has his face mask on (although he thinks it’s a nose bag for popcorn).

Reblogged this on THE MAIN AISLE (c) 2020 and commented:
We all realize that face masks protect health care workers. But if you are a delivery worker or someone who interacts with people on a daily basis as a part of your job you are at risk to contract COVID. This article illustrates how one man’s spouse created facial protection for him. Public kudos to his wife Susan. A fun read! – gc

Great work by Susan, and I’m glad Slugzy didn’t get left out 🙂 I’ve gone for a spot of willing isolation: https://travelwithintent.com/2020/03/30/im-a-fan-of-finding-that-quiet-spot/
