Brightness Overload at the Pier — PastSquares Oct 26

·

Hi All 👋 My entry for Becky’s PastSquares.

It’s a dreich day out there, so I thought I’d revisit some California sunshine & bright colours

These shots were all taken at Santa Monica Pier. With some of them, I’ve put the original followed by two different square crops.

In the process of editing these shots to square, there was a subtle difference in focus & perceived movement, so I thought I’d put up both using the slider function. In the one below, the left-hand crop focuses on the cars & people on the ride whereas the right-hand one has the cars coming in from the right which I think gives more movement to the shot and shows more of the structure.

Again, two differnt crops from the same image.

Seems appropriate

Oddly enough, it was a photographic outing; we didn’t actually go on any rides that day

I’m sure you enjoyed that, too. I was referring to your cropping, and photoshopping

I wasn’t sure if you meant the cropping or the day out, of course I responded to the wrong one?

        Murphy’s Law, always.

Yes, a little bedazzling for me, it’s interesting how cropping in different places gives different movement.

Looking at the different crops is interesting. Sometimes I find it hard to decided which is the best option for my square crops – and some just don’t work at all being squared.

I often have that trouble as well, some shots just cannot be croppped to square

Not sure I could ride on this even with the ‘encouragement’ of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers!

and loving the comparative crops – fascinating how it changes it. Whilst great to see the people, there is something about the ones with more structure

I’m more drawn to the structure as well; I don’t know why, but people feature very rarely in my pictures, they tend to be incidental not the prime focus
