My second post in my Historic Scotland series features The Tenement House. This National Trust for Scotland (NTS) time capsule of the turn of the 20th Century can be found on Buccleuch Street in Glasgow, just north of Sauchiehall Street.

Buccleuch Steet Tenements

Susan vividly remembers staying at her Uncle Billy & Aunt Teresa’s Tenement in Linthouse, Glasgow, as a child. Her grandpa also lived in a tenement Penilee, again in Glasgow.

The particular tenement we are visiting is of Miss Toward.

Miss Toward

So, what is a tenement? A tenement is a type of dwelling where a building is separated into flats or apartments with shared access & stairway.

Below are the common stairs, known as “the close” in Scotland. The residents on the different floors took turns brushing & cleaning the close, a practice still carried out today.

The following carousels will take you room by room in Miss Toward’s tenement.

Lounge

In the first picture, you’ll see tucked in the corner a bed closet.

Bedroom

There is a single bed & Miss Toward’s work area; she worked as a seamstress.

Bathroom

Kitchen

There is a bed recess in the kitchen; only different from the bed closet because it has a curtain instead of a door across it. You’ll see some recipes still used today & even a mechanical floor sweeper (we have one of those still).

Below is a scrap of the original wallpaper. NTS recreated the pattern when setting the tenement up as a visitor site.

Join me next week when I share some pictures & coffee from our recent visit to the oldest shop in Dundee — J.A.Braithwaite LTD
