Moving Water for Water Water Everywhere #215 & Lens-Artists Challenge

Hi All 👋 Feel free to join in whenever you have a water picture to post (any type of water, in any state, will do). See below for how to join the fun

This is also my post for Sofia’s Lens-Artists Challenge: Water In Motion.

For this challenge of water in motion, I thought I’d look at some obvious and less obvious forms of movement.

So, I’m starting this post with water that is put in motion by others. This first shot is the Falkirk Wheel, a boat lift that essential is a section of canal that is rotated from the lower canal to the upper. In the shot, on the left of the wheel, you can see a canal boat sat in the closed off section as it is lifted up.

Here are some more shots of water being moved by the interaction of others; a swan & fishing boat’s bow wave, a tufted duck & starlings having a wash, the Ross Fountain in Edinburgh & a water hazard at a miniature golf course.

Waves at the beach are always a favourite, even on stormy days.

Weather is constantly moving water, be it in the form of rain, snow or wind.

Here we have a river running down to join Loch Long. Loch Long is a tidal loch & is in constant motion, although the movement is not readily apparent.

As with Loch Long, water is generally in constant motion that cannot always be seen. The next two shots illustrate this point perfectly. The first is the Clyde; its mirror-calm appearance hides the fact that it is moving at about 2-3kn (average walking pace). The second is the Fourth Estuary, again, a large body of water whose speed & direction changes with the tidal cycle; a movement that is not readily seen.

Next up are some shots of shallow rivulets running down the beach.

Canals appear to be static bodies of water, but they, too, are in constant motion, as is evident by the water spilling over the top of the lock gate; Lensy wanted to join in this one

And finally, melting water running down an icicle. This series of shots shows the water droplet forming at the bottom of the icicle, detaching & reforming.

Huge selection, Jez. My favourite is the fountain with the castle? Manor? behind it.

That’s Edinburgh Castle in the background. It was one of those lucky mornings with great light, colour & cirrus strewn skies for atmosphere

Loved them all Jez. Had a few favorites I was going to comment on and then I came across the icicle and voila! I had my favorites. Seriously, beautifully done. I always love your images of the Falkirk wheel and this one is no exception. Terrific.

As I expected, a fantastic post from you, Jez. Edinburgh, a favourite, great angle and light on that one. I haven’t been to Loch Long, now is on my list 😀 And great captures of the water and icicle.

Thanks, SophiaLoch Long is best visited out of season if you prefer it quiet. There’s a great carpark at the very top of the Loch & a few shops in the wee village of Arrochar. It’s also just a very short jump across to Tarbet & Loch Lomond
