Abstracts — Lens-Artists Challenge #296

·

Hi All 👋 My entry for this week’s challenge, set by Ritva.

This is an interesting challenge; I’ve never really dabbled in the world of abstract, so here we go.

My first group could fit in a “what is it?” category of abstract.

This first shot looks like an alien forest; it’s a macro shot of dew on moss.

Next up is oil bubbles floating in a pan of water. You can see the texture of the bottom of the pan, & the reflection of the clouds through the window.

Satellite shot of volcanic landscape… nope, just some tree bark.

This is some dew beaded up on a washing line, vibrating in a breeze.

This one is a shot of a 6-point star filter. The dark lines are the shadow of the scoring on the surface (can just be seen as very faint white lines).

A squirrel on the move. This wee guy was running around like crazy, checking to see if the visitors to the Glasgow Botanical Gardens had any nuts for him. The blurring & elongation of his body shows the form of his movement.

In the Glasgow Botanic Gardens is the Kibble Palace, a large steel & glass greenhouse. Suspended from the ceiling are multi-faceted mirrors that provide an abstract reflection of the greenery (& people) below.

The following images are some abstracts that I developed in Canva. They are all horizontal & vertical mirror effects.

Using the same effect, this is quite a fun version of what is known locally as “Squinty Bridge” in Glasgow.

I’ve been working with AI a lot recently through ChatGPT. I was intrigued to see what Hot Mods would do with an abstract prompt (I’ve put down the AI’s interpretation after each image).

I’m starting this one off with a dawn shot through Lensy.

AI description — Here’s the transformed image, re-envisioned in an abstract style with amplified colours and a dreamlike distortion within the glass sphere. The balance and symmetry from the original are maintained while infusing the scene with a vibrant, surreal quality.

Next up, we have a tunnel at the start of the Union Canal.

AI description — The canal tunnel entrance is now envisioned as an abstract, otherworldly portal surrounded by nature that bursts with surreal colours and patterns

This is the canal & top section of the Falkirk wheel.

AI description — The canal, with its circular structures, has been reimagined with a touch of abstract art, complete with a kaleidoscope of colours and patterns in the reflection on the water

Can there be too much abstract??? We now come full circle, back to my first image — the dewdrop/moss macro. I was interested to see how this already abstract shot would turn out when transformed by AI in the abstract style — an abstract of an abstract.

AI description — Transform the close-up image of moss with dewdrops into an abstract style. The dewdrops should be enlarged and take on a crystalline, gem-like quality with refracted light, creating a prism effect and casting vibrant colours all around. The moss strands should appear as elongated, flowing forms, like an undersea landscape with waving aquatic plants. Introduce a dreamy atmosphere by using a soft focus effect to blend the colours and shapes into a tapestry of abstract patterns, where the lines between the water, plants, and air are artistically blurred. The whole composition should evoke the feeling of looking into an otherworldly, microscopic universe rich with colour and fluid, organic shapes.

Jez, I’m late to the party this week after spending time on the road and settling back in at home from our travels.
I have wondered how you create those AI artwork images. Your description tells me a lot. I have to say my favorite is that lensball shot. It’s so colorful. The transformation of the dewdrops to their AI representation is truly beautiful.

It’s obvious how much fun you’re having with AI. They are amazing, especially the moss one. The original photo is also stunning. You’ve done brilliantly, Jez, I hope to see more abstracts from you in the future 🙂

Jez, I liked your take on abstracts. It’s fascinating what we can photograph and has always been right in front of our eyes this whole time. I loved the Canva experiments you created. They are great. The AI re-imagined art is intriguing. I noticed that the AI images appear to have a tendency to use psychedelic colors. Is that your perception? Pardon if the question is mundane.

Thank you so much for your kind words, EgidioThe colouring is based on the AI’s perception of what the term abstract means; it does seem to lean a bit towards surrealism
